From: Patrick Howell O'Neill
To Whom It May Concern:
This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:
All files relating to "ransomware"—malicious software (Cryptolocker, Cryptowall, etc.) that encrypt the contents of a victim’s hard drive, often until the victim pays the hackers to regain control—including any analysis of threat, recorded instances of its use, complaints received, and any actions recommended to businesses or private individuals by the FBI. Please include any financial figures available regarding payments by victims. In a statement last year,, the FBI said it had received "992 CryptoWall-related complaints" from April 2014-June 2015, "with victims reporting losses totaling over $18 million."
The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.
Sincerely,
Patrick Howell O'Neill
