This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:
All correspondence between Mayor Office’s of New York City, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and any representative of the United States Military Academy, regarding the mayor’s plans to visit the United States Military Academy.
I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.
In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Hi Maria,
Under the Freedom of Information Act, agencies are usually required to give at least an estimated amoung time for releasing the records, especially when the agency does not meet its own deadlines for releasing the same records.
Furthermore the records involve a public figure at a well-publicized event, so it is presently unclear why a legal review—at least beyond the normal operations of the FOIA/PA office—was required in this case.
This request was filed over six months ago, and I have patiently waited for the date West Point originally set — June 25, 2014 — for the records to be released.
Can you say whether the records will be released within a month? A year? Ten years? Surely your office has some grasp of how long this will take. This estimate is not binding, nor must it be perfectly precise, but it is generally considered mandatory for agencies complying with FOIA not to keep requesters in the dark about the amount of time it will take to fulfill their requests.
Please reconsider my question.

In accordance with AR 25-55, The Freedom of Information Act Program, before forwarding a FOIA request to an Initial Denial Authority for action, records custodians will obtain an opinion from their servicing Judge Advocate concerning the releasability of the requested records.
We estimate legal review and final action of your FOIA by August 11, 2014 (30 work days from the day it was sent to our Staff Judge Advocate).
