To Whom It May Concern:

This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:

All records on, about, mentioning, or concerning Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, née Roberts (13 October 1925 – 8 April 2013). Proof of death is not required because her 2013 death from a stroke has been widely reported.

Here is the BBC obituary: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22067155
"Former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher has died "peacefully" at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke, her family has announced."

I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Shawn Musgrave

Mr. Musgrave,

This is in reference to your July 31, 2013 email regarding case number F-2013-06280. The estimated completion date for your request is February 2015. Estimated completion dates are subject to change and are "strictly" estimates, not intended to be used as "actual" dates of completion. This is due to unusual circumstances, which may or may not include coordination with other Agencies during the process (referrals, concurrences, etc.). However, please note, interim release dates are provided, as applicable.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have further concerns or have any questions regarding any FOIA-related matters, please contact the FOIA Requester Service Center (FRSC) at (202) 261-8484, or fax us at (202) 261-8582 or send an e-mail to foiastatus@state.gov<mailto:foiastatus@state.gov>

From: Shawn Musgrave

Hello,

I have received your estimated delivery date. I would request that interim releases be made as you process documents, rather than one large release at the conclusion of processing the whole lot.

Thank you,
Shawn Musgrave

Mr. Musgrove,

I checked the electronic notes on this case. The case is still open. The case has been assigned to an analyst and searches have gone out to the appropriate bureaus. The search time varies. Each case is different and the search time depends on the complexity of information requested and the time it takes to review the material.

The estimated completion date for this case is: February 2015

- ECDs are subject to change.

- ECDs are "strictly" estimates and not intended to be used as "actual" dates of completions, due to various extenuating factors, which are beyond the control of the Branch, which may or may not include coordination with other Agencies during the process (referrals, concurrences, etc.).
Interim release dates are provided, as applicable

I hope this information is helpful. If you have further concerns or any questions regarding any FOIA-related matter, please contact the FOIA Requester Service Center (FRSC) at (202) 261-8484, or fax us at (202) 261-8582 or send an e-mail to foiastatus@state.gov<mailto:foiastatus@state.gov>

Dear Mr. Musgrave,

The Office of Information Programs and Services ("IPS") is in the process of reviewing open Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA") request from April 8, 2013 and would like to provide you with the status of your case. (A copy of your letter is attached for your reference.) After receiving back the search results from the tasked bureau, a preliminary search for the six years prior to Margaret Thatcher serving as the British Prime Minister yield 732 documents. This search only covers a small portion of your request and was conducted on only one of the two records systems.

Due to the volume of documents, I ask you to consider narrowing your search dates or focusing your search criteria. A narrow, specific time frame and/or focusing your search criteria will give us a better understanding of what information you are specifically looking to obtain on Margaret Thatcher. Additionally, it would prevent you from waiting several years until you receive a response.

Please let us know how you wish to proceed with your request. I am glad to answer any questions you might have and look forward to working with you on this request.

From: Shawn Musgrave

Hello,

I would be amenable to periodic releases of documents rather than waiting until February 2015 for the whole batch. Will this help?

Thank you,
Shawn

From: de Quesada, Gabriella-Maria L

Dear Mr. Musgrave,

February 2015 was given as an estimated completion date and is subject to change. Because you did not provide a specific time frame during the life of Margaret Thatcher, the search will return thousands of documents that will take several years to process and review. We do send out interim releases, but even so your request will not be completed by February 2015.
What would help us are a narrow, specific time frame and a focused criteria search (what information, subject matter, etc. on Margaret Thatcher are you looking for? or what is the information you want in regards to, deal with?).

Thank you for this guidance. I agree to limit this request to the time period you've already searched (6 years before Ms. Thatcher became Prime Minister), but please extend the search to both systems.

Thank you,
Shawn

From: de Quesada, Gabriella-Maria L

Dear Mr. Musgrave,

I will limit the search dates from 1973 to 1978 and have resumed the search. Are you looking for documents concerning Margaret Thatcher on a specific subject? Understanding what you are specifically looking for will cut down on search time spent finding documents you do not want and speed up the processing time.

Thank you.

Dear Shawn,

I am sorry for this late response. Almost all the documents have been located and will be sent to review shortly. Due to the volume of documents, I believe the estimated completion date to be around September 2015. A more specific or narrowed subject would speed up the processing time. We are working on getting these documents out to you as quickly as possible and will send out interim releases.
