Crowdfund Request: Legion of Doom

Help cover the request fees needed to free these docs!

The Legion of Doom (LOD) was a hacker group active from the 1980s to the late 1990s and early 2000. During its heyday from around 1984-1991 Legion of Doom was widely considered to be the most capable hacking group in the world. To this day, LOD ranks as one of the most influential hacking groups in the history of technology. Their name appears to be a reference to the antagonists of Challenge of the Super Friends. LOD was founded by the hacker Lex Luthor, after a rift with his previous group the Knights of Shadow.

At different points in the group’s history, LOD was split into LOD and LOD/LOH (Legion of Doom/Legion of Hackers) for the members that were more skilled at hacking than pure phreaking. The overall beliefs of LOD and MOD (Masters of Deception) were different, but it can be difficult to untangle the actions of the members since there was a cross-over between the two groups.

Unlike the hacking group MOD, there were different opinions regarding what the Legion of Doom was. LOD published the Legion of Doom Technical Journals and contributed to the overall pool of hacking knowledge. They considered themselves not causing any direct harm to the phone systems and computer networks they took over. Still, many LOD members were raided and prosecuted for causing alleged damage to systems.

Backed by Steve Ragan, Jurre van Bergen, Blake Johnson, Luke Jahnke, and 14 others.

$1,598.50 raised out of $1,598.50.

As you are no doubt aware, you are required to provide status updates about requests. I have requested one.

I would like to know the status of the request, and why it is not located in the database you insist I use. The request is over four years old, and I agreed to pay all fees. It is unacceptable that I am unable to get a simple status update.

Your agency was to re-open all my of requests.

From: Federal Bureau of Investigation

Good morning Ms. Best,

This is in reference to your FOIPA request #1422659-000 for FBI records concerning Legion of Doom. We are reaching out to you to determine if you are still interested in these records, or, if at this time, you would consider reducing the size of your request.

Requests are processed in the order in which they are received through our multi-track processing system, and the FBI receives a voluminous amount of requests on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis. Requests are divided into two primary tracks -simple (under 50 pages of potentially responsive documents) and complex (over 50 pages of potentially responsive documents). Complex requests are further divided into medium (51-500 pages), large (501-4,999 pages), and extra-large (5,000 and over pages) sub-tracks are based upon request size.

Your request is currently in the extra-large track and reducing the scope of your request may accelerate the processing, allow for a timelier receipt of the information you seek, and reduce the duplication costs, if applicable.

Please contact us with regards to this inquiry to let us know if you are still interested in receiving records for this request either in full (the remaining records), or reducing the request to a faster processing track.
If you reduce the size, you may request remaining, additional records by submitting a new FOIPA request upon completion of this one.
