KRON-FM documents

This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:

Any documents that mention the now defunct KRON FM radio station in San Francisco, California. This radio station was on the air from July 1947 to 1975, after which time the callsign of the channel changed to KOIT. This is not a request for KOIT documents. Please limit the search to documents only from the period of July 1947 to 1975.

This request is for any and all records about KRON-FM at any and all FBI offices, including HQ, field offices (including, specifically, the Butte, Sacramento and San Francisco offices) legal attaches, and facilities that maintain records under the FBI’s control.

In addition, this request also includes any “cross-referenced” records relevant to your inquiry. Along with “ELSUR” (Electronic Surveillance) records for KRON-FM. These include the names of all people and/or locations for which the agency sought a court order for electronic surveillance.

In addition, this request asks the FBI to search the Sentinel database, the Investigative Data Warehouse, and the Data Integration and Visualization System for relevant documents related to KRON-FM from the time period of 1947 to 1975.

Thank you for your commitment to transparency, and it is my belief that these documents could contain information of historical interest.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

Hello. Respectfully, I am appealing this decision. I will provide additional information which could possibly assist in the discovery of documents that were not discovered in the initial search. KRON has been in mentioned in documents previously released via the FOIA process.

Most importantly: Please treat “KRON”, “KRON-FM”, and “KRON FM” as separate search terms that could all return documents relevant to the request.

As an example, on 11-21-69, a message (what I assume is an AirTel) was sent from FBI BUTTE to, “DIRECTOR (9-49911), SAN FRANCISCO (9-2296), SACRAMENTO AND ST. LOUIS”. This message was titled “ZODIAC, EXTORTION, 00 SACRAMENTO”, and was a part of casefile 9-49911-54. This document (heavily redacted upon its FOIA release many years ago) contains a sentence which includes the KRON call letters. This document discussed a possible Zodiac suspect, who was theorized by a cryptology expert. The sentence states, “probably living in San Francisco Bay Area and associated with radio station KRON in San Francisco.”

In short, the radio station KRON was mentioned in at least one document related to an extortion case file of 9-49911. This was a Zodiac related document. I would like to see an additional search of documents that mention the terms “KRON”, “KRON FM” or “KRON-FM” as any of these terms could possibly return documents relevant to the original request. The one document that was previously released should be re-evaluated to determine if such heavy redaction is so necessary. Like many people, I am interested in the Zodiac case, and I personally believe the, “This is the Zodiac Speaking” line is something a radio DJ would say. Additionally, during the Haight-Ashbury era, KRON was exceptionally conservative channel that played things like radio plays of Gilbert and Sullivan productions.

While I am especially interested in any mentions of KRON in relation to the 9-49911 case, as a Californian I am interested in any KRON documents.
