Dear Ms. Best:

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Inspector General (OIG). I am writing in regards to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request (HQ-2019-00976-F) you submitted on June 5, 2019. DOE sent you an acknowledgment letter on June 6, 2019.

In the request you are seeking copies of records mentioning or describing audits, reviews, investigations or reports regarding the agency's cyber security, including audits or investigations regarding the state of the agency's cyber security regarding potential attacks as well as audits and investigations conducted in the wake of a suspected or actual cyber attack, hacking incident or breach. The timeframe for the request is January 1, 1996 through June 30, 2016.

Are you able to provide additional clarification as to exactly what types of records you are seeking?

Please be advised that all DOE OIG audits, inspections, and other reports are publicly posted on OIG's website
https://www.energy.gov/ig/calendar-year-reports

If you would like to speak with someone, please contact our office at 202-287-6892.
Regards,

Karen

Ms. Best

I have been attempting to reach you since 7/2/19 trying to clarify the scope/meaning of the above referenced FOIA request. The OIG has requested clarification/confirmation on your request that is seeking "Copies of records mentioning or describing audits, reviews, investigations or reports regarding the agency's cyber security, including audits or investigations regarding the state of the agency's cyber security regarding potential attacks as well as audits and investigations conducted in the wake of a suspected or actual cyber attack, hacking incident or breach. Please include material generated between 1 January 1996 and 30 June 2016."

Based upon our understanding of the phrase "records mentioning or describing," your request covering a 10-year period is quite expansive (to the extent records still exist and can be searched through key words, such as "cyber security", cyber attack", "hacking"... Whether you intended or not, are you amenable to interpreting/narrowing your request to the audit and investigation reports in which the matters are subject?

If you provide this information to me by August 15, 2019, it would be greatly apprecitated.

Thank you,
Karen
