Presidential Unit Citation Announcement of Award to SEAL Team One, United States Navy. March 18, 1971
The President today awarded the Presidential Unit Citation to SEAL Team One, a subordinate unit of the Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Vietnam, for extraordinary achievement while participating in combat operations in Southeast Asia in support of United States national policy during the period 22 January 1968 to 20 May 1969. SEAL Team One was cited for its outstanding performance of duty while carrying out its mission of conducting unconventional warfare and special operations in and from restricted waters, rivers, and canals of the Republic of Vietnam. During the period of this award, SEAL Team One had three detachments operating: one based at the Naval Support Detachment, Binh Thuy, one assigned to U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, and the other located in Danang. SEAL Team One employed small unit tactics, operating principally at night, utilizing helicopters, small boats, or whatever type vehicle best suited the specific operation at hand. Carrying the fight into some of the enemy's most secluded and in the past, safe havens, the personnel of SEAL Team One inflicted significant damage on the supplies, bases and morale of hos tile forces. Operating in remote areas, frequently removed from all allied support, SEAL Team One personnel provided a vital contribution to the success of the free world forces in Southeast Asia.

The citation follows: By virtue of the authority vested in me as President of the United States and as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States, I have today awarded
THE PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION (NAVY)
FOR EXTRAORDINARY HEROISM TO
SEAL TEAM ONE
For extraordinary heroism and outstanding performance of duty from 22 January 1968 to 20 May 1969 in connection with counterinsurgency operations against enemy forces in the Republic of Vietnam. Operating under the most trying and rigorous of warfare environments, invariably within enemy territory and virtually without communication or support from other allied forces, the various small detachments of SEAL Team ONE consistently demonstrated outstanding courage, teamwork, and resourcefulness in carrying out over 350 extremely hazardous combat missions, including combat area sweeps, demolition raids, search and seizures, and interdiction of lines of communications and supply routes. These actions resulted in the infliction of heavy casualties upon enemy forces, the severance of enemy lines of communications, the capture or destruction of large quantities of ammunition and Supplies, the collection of vitally important intelligence data, and the destruction of numerous enemy sampans, junks, and fortifications. The significant record of accomplishment achieved by SEAL Team ONE attests to the bravery, professionalism, esprit de corps, and dedication of the individual officers and men of this unique combat unit. Their exemplary and inspiring performance of duty contributed substantially to the overall United States effort in the Republic of Vietnam, reflected great credit upon them selves, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
