The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to
JAMES O. WALLACE, JR.
CHIEF ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN
UNITED STATES NAVY
for service as set forth in the following:
CITATION
"For meritorious service while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong communist aggressors in the Republic of Vietnam from February to September 1969. As assistant squad leader for an eight man squad of the SEVENTH Platoon, United States Navy SEAL Team, Detachment ALFA, Chief Petty Officer WALLACE participated on over forty-three clandestine combat operations. A typical example of his performance occured on 3 March 1969 when his squad was on a raid mission in Cao Ke District. Detecting a suspected enemy dwelling, Chief Petty Officer WALLACE, acting as rear security and grenadier, immediately assumed a security position near the structure. When the patrol leader and pointman entered the hootch, the squad received small arms and automatic weapons fire from inside the dwelling. From his position, he observed one of the enemy attempting to escape through a slide door. He then delivered a barrage of fire towards the sighting killing the enemy. He then assisted in suppressing the enemy fire. A search of the area resulted in the discovery of two enemy bodies and several blood trails. Chief Petty Officer WALLACE's devotion to duty, courage under fire and exemplary professionalism were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
The Combat Distinguishing Device is Authorized.
