This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:
- All budget documents related to the FBI's Going Dark initiative, from 1st January 2007 to the date of this request.
In order to help to determine my status to assess fees, you should know that I am a journalist writing for The Daily Beast, and that this request is being made as part of news gathering.
I also request expedited processing. The problem of Going Dark is one of the most crucial issues law enforcement agencies around the world face today. The proliferation of robust encryption in consumer products has amplified this problem, particularly post-Snowden. The Going Dark problem, and how authorities can and will respond to it, is of significant public interest, and the requested records will provide more much needed context on this problem.
The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.
In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.
