To Whom It May Concern:

This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:

A copy of any databases that track, summarize, or otherwise contain information on annual Emergency Department visits involving misuse/abuse of pharmaceuticals as well as ED visits due to illicit drugs over the past three (3) years.

Additionally I would like this data for each of the New England States: Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Maine and Rhode Island.

I request this information in its original database format or as a CSV or EXCEL export.

I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Anais Vaillant

Dear Ms. Vaillant,

We appreciate your interest in the Drug Abuse Warning Network. Your Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was forwarded to me recently and I'm happy to provide you with data from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN). The DAWN data collection was based on a nationally-representative sample of hospitals and selected metropolitan areas from 2003 through 2011.

In your request, you were interested in DAWN data for the New England states (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Maine and Rhode Island), but unfortunately, DAWN was not designed to be a state-based survey and as such, we are unable to provide data by state.

Because of their size, I cannot e-mail the files to you, but what we put together for you is a DVD containing the following zipped files:

1. 2009, 2010 and 2011 DAWN Public Use Files (PUFs) in .csv format

2. DAWN Codebooks for the 2009-2011 Public Use files

3. 3 Excel files:

a. Nat'l Estimates of Drug-Related ED Visits - All Misuse and Abuse

b. Nat'l Estimates of Drug-Related ED Visits - Illicits

c. Nat'l Estimates of Drug-Related ED Visits - Nonmedical Use of Pharmaceuticals

DAWN's main webpage can be found here: http://www.samhsa.gov/data/DAWN.aspx
Definitions for DAWN can be found here: http://www.samhsa.gov/data/2k13/DAWN2k11ED/rpts/DAWN2k11-Glossary.htm

I have also included the .pdf entitled, "Guide to DAWN Trend Tables, 2011 Update" which provides very useful information as you navigate the Excel files and PUFs.

The DVD will be mailed (address is shown below) tomorrow, February 12th, via 2-day mail.
