From: Carly Sitrin
To Whom It May Concern:
This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:
Copies and/or screenshots of all "direct messages" sent to or received by the Department of Justice's official Twitter account: http://twitter.com/TheJusticeDept. This request is not for publicly available tweets, but instead for private messages exchanged between other Twitter users and the @TheJusticeDept Twitter account. An explanation of "direct messages" can be found here:
https://support.twitter.com/articles/14606-posting-or-deleting-direct-messages
The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.
In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.
Sincerely,
Carly Sitrin

To Whom It May Concern:
I wanted to follow up on the following Freedom of Information request, copied below, and originally submitted on July 23, 2015. Please let me know when I can expect to receive a response, or if further clarification is needed. You had assigned it reference number #EMRUFOIA072315-3.
Thanks for your help, and let me know if further clarification is needed.

Ms. Sitrin,
As we stated in our acknowledgement of August 13, 2015 we are searching in the Office of Public Affairs. That search continues. I understand the frustration in waiting for a response to your request and will attempt to describe the process a little so as to explain why a FOIA request takes time to process.
Your request is for Office of Public Affairs (PAO) records. When I received your request, I wrote a search memo to PAO describing the records that you seek. Unfortunately, it is now out of our (the Office of Information Policy) hands as to how long it will take PAO to conduct its search. While your specific search may possibly be conducted relatively quickly, it necessarily has to wait in line behind other searches sent before yours that may take longer. I can tell you that I spoke to someone in the PAO and they told me that PAO doesn’t read or respond to Twitter “direct messages,” so anything that is eventually discovered will be messages to the Department and not from the Department. The FOIA does require me to give an estimated time for a response, but as your request is currently dependent on another Office’s search, I would only be a guessing based on the average length of time for a search. I will provide an estimate if you would like one.
I would be more than happy to discuss the process in general, or your request specifically with you at your convenience; in fact I hope you call if you need any further clarification. My direct telephone line is 202-616-5456 or you can respond to this email, eric.hotchkiss@usdoj.gov<mailto:eric.hotchkiss@usdoj.gov>. Also, for your information it would be more efficient to email me directly and reference the tracking number PAO/15-04959 (F) rather than the EMRUFOIA #.
Thank you for your time.
