To Whom It May Concern:
I wanted to follow up on the following Freedom of Information request, copied below, and originally submitted on Aug. 4, 2017. Please let me know when I can expect to receive a response, or if further clarification is needed. You had assigned it reference number #DON-USMC-2017-009194.
Thanks for your help, and let me know if further clarification is needed.

Mr. Maass,
Thank you for the follow up concerning your case. I have begun the process of closing out your request due to non-responsiveness, but it has not been completely closed yet. I would be happy to keep your request open if you would provide some clarification concerning your request and address if you are willing to pay processing fees that may be incurred while processing your request. More details concerning these two issues are contained within the attachments.
A letter dated August 15, 2017, was sent to you via certified mail requesting clarification. The letter sent was not a letter stating, "the request is being processed" as stated in your email. I have attached the letter and the return postcard confirming delivery to the mailing address provided for your reference.
If your response is not received by September 26, 2017, I will have to close your request due to non-responsiveness and you will have to make a new request.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

My apologies for missing your earlier correspondence. In 2012, I was provided similar information by Capt. Gregory Wolf (gregory.wolf@usmc.mil) via email.
He provided the data via email in the following format:
Number of new deserters
FY05 1,173
FY06 1,084
FY07 1,079
FY08 1,491
FY09 1,158
FY10 743
FY11 423
FY12 172
Number of deserters returned
FY05 1,069
FY06 784
FY07 1,243
FY08 1,503
FY09 1,019
FY10 684
FY11 549
FY12 221
I am simply seeking to update this data set (so basically just looking for eight year-end totals). If you happen to have csv data sets or tables already existing, those would also be responsive.
Thank you.

Mr. Maass,
I needed to follow up with your concerning your request to HQMC. I noticed that you did not address whether you were willing to pay any fees associated with your request. Please clarify if you are willing to pay any fees associated with the processing of your request. You can set a limit on the fees and if we believe that the charges will exceed the amount you specify, we will contact you to receive further instructions.
Since the original deadline specified in the letter I sent to you has passed, I must ask that you provide a response addressing the fee issues by no later than Friday, September 29, 2017. If no response if provided, your request will be closed.

I will pay up to $10 in fees. If more is required, please let me know in advance. However, since I'm only asking for a few figures, I don't think that any expense should be required.
