Dear Annela M. Lopez, Open Records Coordinator at UT at Austin, alopez@austin.utexas.edu

Your name was mentioned on a recent letter I received from Margo Iwanski writing on behalf of
Mary E. Knight, both of whom are cc-ed on this email to you.

I appreciate the effort UT at Austin made to somehow respond to my recent request for the college transcript of Jeb Bush, a current presidential candidate whose educational record is reported differently in various media reports I have read (he graduated in "2-1/2 years" according to the LA Times, in ""3-1/2 year" according to USA Today, he was inducted into Phi Beta kappa years after he left UT, in "1975").

However, although UT at Austin sent me a document called an "Academic Certification" claiming Jeb Bush graduated in the August 1974 with Phi Beta Kappa, I am completely unfamiliar with this document that was sent to me -- as I recognize it is not an academic transcript. Frankly, I am not sure what it is.

Is this a document that was specially made in response to my request, or does it actually exist for any and every student attending or graduating from UT at Austin? I am thinking there must be a public record somewhere at UT to explain, define and clarify this document and its purpose.

Consequently, pursuant to the Texas Public Information Act , I hereby request the following records:

Seeking a certified copy of the public record found anywhere in publicly available documents at UT at Austin which explains and defines a document UT at Austin sent to me called an "Academic Certification" in response to my request for the college transcript of Jeb Bush.

The requested document will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Susan Alyn

Ms. Lopez:

Is there any public record document anywhere at your university which explains the meaning and purpose of an "Academic Certification" which
is what I was sent? That is what this current public record is seeking, and I would think somewhere in a student handbook or university policy statement such a document exists. Does it?

Thank you,
Susan Alyn
