Hi,

Under the state public records law, I am a journalist writing to request data from your department as part of a national project on stolen firearms. Can your department please provide the following:

1) Number of guns that were stolen in each 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

2) Number of guns that were stolen from motor vehicles in each 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

For both Nos. 1 and 2, we are only seeking the number of guns stolen for each year, not police reports or any other details. If possible, please include only the number of stolen firearms, not lost firearms. If lost firearms must be included, please advise us.

I am a reporter with The Trace (thetrace.org), a 501c3 nonprofit news organization, making this request through MuckRock’s public records request management service. These figures will be made available to the general public. This request is not being made for commercial purposes.

Hi Beverly,

I don't see anything below in yellow. It's probably just this system screen that I'm looking at. Would you mind forwarding it to my email foia@thetrace.org?

Thank you for your patience while we worked on your request. Attached, you will find the information requested.

In regards to your request for information regarding lost, stolen or missing law enforcement firearms, we have requested this information from various departments and what we found is noted below:

From Sam Gereg Office of the Chief

“I was able to locate one internal investigation report where an officer left her issued firearm in a commercial establishment restroom on December 12, 2007. An employee called TPD, and the firearm was immediately recovered by the responding officer. An internal investigation was conducted under case #II 07-40. This is the only case I was able to locate at this time.”

From Alan Donaldson – Police Training
The only ones I am aware of are as follows:

LCSO case #14-0130130 – Leon County Sheriff’s Office
LCSO case #14-00035515 – Leon County Sheriff’s Office
TPD case #15-3174

There were a total of 3 handguns and a shotgun. Two of the handguns have been recovered.
