To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Connecticut Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request the following records:

Your office's catalog, inventory, index, log, report, or other listing of (1) the books in your possession or control which registrars used to record birth, marriages, deaths, and burials before 1900 (including any Land Records books and/or Town or Proprietors Meeting/Minutes/Record books which include any records of birth, marriages and deaths) and (2) other books, records, and documents in your possession or control which index, copy, regroup, reference or support town birth, deaths and marriages, including communications or reports of communication from ministers, justices of the peace, sextons, and other witnesses to any aspect of births, marriages, burials, and/or deaths prior to 1900.

I also request that, if possible and pursuant to Conn. Gen. Stat. § 1-212(d), fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest and not made for commercial gain. The requested documents will be processed by a representative of the news media/press and made available to the public at MuckRock.com.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 4 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Linda MacLachlan

From: Town Clerk

Dear Linda:
Please be advised that the Town of Suffield has no electronic catalog, inventory, index, log, report, or other listing records responsive to your request.
Land records that date back to this period may be viewed in person but no electronic indexes are available.
Please note that vital records do not fall under the freedom of information statutes because they are governed by their own statutes.
For any minister correspondence you will have to reach out to the individual churches.
Please feel free to reach out to us if we can be of additional assistance.
Sincerely,
Kathy

My request includes lists on paper and the willingness to pay for photocopying. I have seen the your office submitted to the Connecticut State Library a century ago. Surely you have an updated copy.
Thank you,
Linda MacLachlan

From: Town Clerk

Hi Linda
We do not have any electronic index available with regards to vital indexes or land records at this time.
I called the Library for the State of Ct trying to gain clarification and see what they may have on file regarding your request. The public Records Division was unaware of any listing as well.
Many years ago I am told that the Church of Ladder Day Saints did come to Town hall and index information for genealogy. Perhaps that may have be the index you are looking for. If this is the case, I do not hold those listings here in Suffield.
If you are looking for paper copies, I can try to tally up any printed material to see how much the request will be. In looking at the land records from the 1700’s to 1900 there are 42 volumes of records. Each volume contains anywhere from 800 to 1000 pages per book. Some records are going to require that the microfilm is pulled allowing the ability for copying. Our very old records are quite fragile, light and we are unable to use a traditional copier as it damages the print and binding.
Please feel free to call me so that I can try to narrow down the search of what documents you are trying to obtain and what direction I can take to assist you..
Sincerely,
Kathy

First, The Connecticut State Library list is in the History and Genealogy Unit in a file/notebook titled "Original Town Records Survey, pre-1820. According to this, your original records from 1757-1798, a volume of at least 276 pages is at Suffield’s Kent Library instead of being in your vault. Is this still true?
Second, I am aware of all these Suffield vital records sources filmed at your office by the Latter Day Saints in 1949:
• v. 1. Births, marriages, deaths, miscellaneous 1662-1795
• v. 1 Births, marriages, deaths 1662-1904 (a 1780 transcription of births, marriages, and deaths from the first book and other records).
• v. 2 Births, marriages, deaths 1847-1877
• Land records v. 1-2 1747-1793 (Vol. 1 includes records of births, marriages, deaths, marriage intentions).
Are these books still in your possession and correctly titled?
Third, have you any books at all that list Suffield births in chronological order, I,e., in the order they occurred?
Thank you,
Linda MacLachlan
