To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the California Public Records Act (California Government Code §§ 6250), I hereby request the following records:

Any and all records on the investigation into the disappearance and death Gary DeVore.

Any and all files on Gary DeVore (September 17, 1941 – June 28, 1997) was a Hollywood screenwriter best known for Raw Deal and for his bizarre death in 1997. DeVore disappeared in June 1997, prompting an extensive search and media speculation. A year later, his car was discovered submerged in the California Aqueduct in Palmdale, California.

To help with your search I have included some links regarding Mr DeVore:

FOIA case law establishes the extent to which agencies MUST search all records system reasonably believed to contain responsive documents, even if it means contacting former employees. Truitt v. Department of State, 897 F.2d 540, 542 (D.C. Cir. 1990) makes it explicitly clear that it is the obligation of the Department to “conduct a search reasonably calculated to uncover all relevant documents.” In addition, the Justice Department’s May 2004 FOIA Guide states that an agency “cannot limit its search to only one record system if there are others that are likely to turn up the information requested.”
The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Joseph Lloyd

To Sgt. Greene and Sgt. Soto,

Thank you for the time and effort you have put into dealing with this request. I imagine this case is very complex and has commanded a great deal of attention over the years.
However I would require an estimate or failing that a rough estimate how much it would cost to fulfil the request . I think it would be a waste of my time and yours if I was to agree to pay something for something I did not know (or cover) the entire cost of.

Kind regards,
Joe
