To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the California Public Records Act (California Government Code §§ 6250), I hereby request the following records:

Records containing the names, dates, place of death, and if available occupation and employer of all people, who've committed suicide since 2010.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Gershon Bialer

From: Office of the Coroner

Dear Mr. Bialer,

I have received your Public Records Request. The request that you have made is one that will require some time to prepare since it is a fairly extensive request to compile these records for an 8-year period. We do not have a dedicated records clerk, so the requests are completed by staff members who have numerous other duties and projects to attend to. What is your expected timeline to receive this data? I will let you know if that seems reasonable for our office.

As far as your request goes, we have a “Coroner’s Investigation Report” that is considered public record. This report contains a brief comment about the circumstance, cause and manner of death, location of death, and basic demographic information. This may have more information than what you are looking for; however, this may be the most appropriate option to provide the requested information. The other option would be that we can create an Excel file containing the names, dates, and places of death for all suicide cases since 2010; however, this is the only information that we would input into the Excel sheet.

Please note that neither option includes occupation or employer information. Occupation information is tracked on the decedent’s death certificate. You can request informational copies of the death certificates through the Department of Vital Statistics in San Mateo County.

I wanted to let you know that we will not charge any fees for your request and we do not provide these records electronically in any format. We will provide you with a paper-copy of the requested records.

I will look forward to receiving your reply.

Thank you,

If you can send me the relevant Coroner’s Investigation Reports, that would work for me. If you can send me at least a few of the relevant reports earlier, I'd be good with waiting until March 1 for the full batch.

From: Office of the Coroner

Thank you for the quick reply. March 1 seems like a reasonable time frame for our office.
