Hi,

Pursuant to the California Public Records Act (California Government Code §§ 6250), I hereby request the following records:

A copy of the public records request(s) submitted by the Bay Area News Group that was seeking information pertaining to how many guns had been stolen or are missing from law enforcement officers in your department since 2010, as well as the records that were provided in response to that request.

The Bay Area News Group published a story on June 26, 2016, saying the organization had surveyed more than 240 law enforcement agencies across the Bay Area and found that hundreds of police-issued weapons had either been stolen, lost, or couldn't be accounted for. In a section explaining how The Bay Area News Group reached its findings, the organization said it asked your department "for reports on individual weapons that were stolen or are missing" and for your department's "weapons control documents, such as inventories."

Please provide a copy of The Bay Area News Group's request(s) and the records that your department provided to The Bay Area News Group in response to that request(s).

Here is a link to The Bay Area News Group's story for your reference: http://extras.mercurynews.com/policeguns/

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. This request is being filed by The Trace, a nonprofit news organization, through MuckRock's public records management system. Please address all invoices to The Trace, not MuckRock.

I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Brian Freskos

Hi Monique,

Can you advise what's the record that was too large to send via email?

From: Ben Hallman

Would you mind also sending me a copy of the requests that the Bay Area News Group filed with your office?

From: Villarreal, Monique

The additional record is a 46-page report which contains redactions of California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) information and personal identifiers. I am attempting to attach the report as a single attachment.
