From: Dave Maass

To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Oregon Public Records Law, I hereby request the following documents:

All permits related to the filming of the TV show Grimm and communications between Portland Film Office and producers of Grimm, including but not limited NBC, Universal Television, GK Productions, and Hazy Mills Productions.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I would request your response within ten (10) business days.

Sincerely,

Dave Maass

Greetings:

We are in receipt of your request but in speaking to our person in the Portland Film Office it doesn't sound like we really have what you're looking for.

He reports that no permits are generated by the Portland Film Office - those are done by the various bureaus of the City of Portland. You can submit a public records request with them using this link: https://portlandor.mycusthelp.com/WEBAPP/_rs/(S(hhispgpn3t2nnle3rp31y25c))/supporthome.aspx

If you're looking for information regarding any kind of incentives, neither the Portland Film Office nor the City of Portland offer those.

We do have email that are in the thousands but an attorney would need to review them first before releasing. I would generally estimate that cost at around $500.

Please let me know if you'd like to proceed and I can get an invoice prepared for pre-payment.

Sincerely,
Frederick Davis-Brown

I appreciate the response and your help directing me to the right office.

Does the Portland Film Office maintain a file for this particular production? That may be more relevant to my overall request without requiring your staff to search through emails.

Thank you,

Dave

From: Portland Film Office

I confirmed with our person that we don't have any paper files - every communication came through on email.

Can you tell us what exactly you're looking for? We might be able to narrow down the search for you.

From: Dave Maass

Sorry for the delay in responding. Things picked up a bit at work, and I'm a bit behind.

I was speaking before a class of university students about public records act requests. We decided to file one together to see how the process plays out. The students were interested in learning about what records might exist between shows like Grimm and Portland government.

I don't think thousands of emails are in our interest or yours. Would it be possible to discuss narrowing the request to see a representative sample?
