We are a peaceful mountain town with no police. Total expenditures for law enforcement is 0 and has been for many years. Officers from the neighboring town aren't even allowed to set foot here while on duty. It's a wonderful place

Hi Ms. Goffreda,

Thanks so much for responding to this request. My name is Cassidy Jensen and I'm a reporter at the Concord Monitor - my colleague Beryl Lipton sent the original request. Just to confirm, Orange has not had a police department since prior to 2000? When you say no police aren't allowed to set foot in town, does that include state police?

Thanks so much again and feel free to call me at 603-369-3322 with any questions.

Best,
Cassidy Jensen

: )
To be precise: Orange has not had a police officer since 2011. Before then, a resident was employed part time as police officer, known informally to residents as a "peace officer" , whose role was to help handle emergencies and diffuse disturbances. Incidentally he was terminated due to failure to submit his financial records in a timely manner. The 2000-2010 financial records should all be in the old town reports..If you request them then I can dig them up given some time.

Re: other questions, police officers of neighboring towns are not permitted to police here. We do have access to state police that residents can call for their services, though the troop that handles all calls from Orange is located 1.5 hours away driving distance and services 73 other towns. https://www.nhsp.dos.nh.gov/troop-stations/troop-f
They will make their way here when called to come, otherwise they are not present in the town.
