From: Nicole Wheeler

To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Nebraska Public Records Statutes (Neb. Rev. Stat. § 84-712), I hereby request the following records:

In this article: http://www.omaha.com/news/metro/mayor-stothert-proposes-ordinance-to-ban-people-from-narrow-medians/article_b05d2546-a2dc-11e7-8f95-07b0ca21367a.html the City of Omaha states that 74% of all pedestrian-vehicle crashes occur within 200 feet of an intersection. Looking to see all data and analysis that went into that number and all correspondence or email around that statistic, including whether or not those crashes were within a crosswalk.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 4 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Nicole Wheeler

Nicole,

Good morning. Per your records request submitted on October 25th, attached
please find the data requested. Omaha's Public Works Department also shared
the following statement,
I have attached the requested information.

"The news article referenced in the request had a quote that "74 percent of
all pedestrian-vehicle accidents in Omaha occurred within about 200 feet of
an intersection". The request is for data which supports this statement.

The 74% of all pedestrian crashes occurred *AT* intersections as shown by
the attached data. Also included are the statistics for crashes within 200
feet of an intersection; this was other data created for the ordinance to
develop the 200 foot restriction.
Thanks,

From: Nicole Wheeler

Thank you so much for sending! I was also looking for (apologies if this wasn't clear originally) of the pedestrian vehicles that were AT the intersection, what percentage of those were pedestrians who were in a crosswalk?

Thanks in advance,
Nicole

Dear Nicole,

This will follow up on your previous request. Unfortunately, the data
maintained by the City's Public Works Department does not delineate whether
pedestrians involved in accidents with vehicles were in the crosswalk or
not. The records of the Public Works Department show that there were 909
pedestrian crashes in the time frame you requested.

We have checked with the Omaha Police Department to see if they keep this
data in any useful form. For any reported accident, there should be an
incident report generated by the responding officer. Unfortunately, the
reports do not have a field to identify if the accident occurs in a
crosswalk. It does identify if the accident occurred at an intersection.
The only way that one could try to find the data you requested, is to
identify the incident reports, have someone review them, and then capture
what was needed. I would anticipate that this would take 30 to 50 hours of
work and we request reimbursement for all hours after 4. If you are
interested in getting a more specific cost, please let me know.
