To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Oklahoma Open Records Act, I hereby request the following records:

Police reports for every motor vehicle break-in and/or larceny from a motor vehicle that occurred in 2015. I want to determine how many vehicle break-ins occurred in your jurisdiction and basic information about each, including what, if anything, was stolen.

I want to see all the information contained in each police report, including, but not limited to, the time and location of each crime; the criminal's method of entry; the make and model of the vehicle; descriptions of what was stolen and where from inside the vehicle each item was stolen; victims' names, ages, addresses and contact information; and the narrative summary of what happened.

If this data is collated in a digital file or database, providing the results of a search query that yields this information would be an acceptable substitute to physical copies of the reports.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I would request your response within ten (10) business days.

Sincerely,

Ben Hallman

Ben,

Unfortunately the information you requested for 2015 covers literally thousands of reports. We are unable to fulfill a request of that multitude. Is there something more specific we could help you with? We do track the total number of those types of reports which are taken every year, and I would be happy to provide you with that information.

Thank you,

Hi Megan,

I'm going to discuss with my editor when he get backs tomorrow morning and get back to you. Most likely we'll find a way to narrow it.

From: Ben Hallman

Hi Megan,

Instead of requesting incident reports for every larceny from a motor vehicle in 2015, what if we only requested reports for larcenies from motor vehicles in which a firearm was stolen in 2015? We still want see all the information contained in the report.

Could you also provide the TOTAL number of larcenies from motor vehicles that were reported to your department in 2015, no matter what, if anything, was stolen? All we'd need is a number.

From:

Ben,

There is really no way for us to specifically provide reports with that type of information. We would have to locate, then filter through every burglary report by hand (auto and home), and then look through each of those reports to see what was taken. And unfortunately that would take an unreasonably long amount of time since our officers take over 10,000 burglary reports a year.

Also, we made contact with our burglary unit just to find out if we keep track of the auto burglary numbers, and the supervisor advised us that the only statistics we keep are for the total number of burglaries (which is home, business and auto combined). The supervisor advised me that we average approximately 750 auto burglaries in Oklahoma City every month. Below is the link to our website which shows you the break downs of crime stats in our city which are tracked and reported:

I apologize for not being able to provide the requested information, but I hope we were able to help a little!

Have a great weekend and feel free to let me know if you have any more questions,

Thank you Megan. Is there perhaps any way you could provide me just 10 auto burglary reports in which a gun was taken. Perhaps one of the detectives can remember some and look them up quick?

From:

Good morning,

I contacted the Burglary unit this morning and the Lieutenant sent me 7 case numbers of cases which they have had this past week. I have attached the reports. I hope this helps!

Thank you,
Megan Morgan

Thank you so much Megan! What is the Lt.'s name? I'd like to chat with him in general about auto burglaries.

From:

Unfortunately they are so busy in that area of investigations that I think you will be stuck with me.

From: Ben Hallman

No worries! Thanks for asking! Do you know if they could tell me the name of someone they arrested for stealing a gun from a car, and basic information about that person, like an arrest record? We'd like to try to interview some people who've been caught doing this.

From:

Ben,

Here is the link to access our jail blotters for the last 30 days. You can click on those links and find anyone who was arrested by our the Police Department for Auto Burglary for the dates that are listed.

From: Ben Hallman

Sounds great! I don't see a link in your last message though. Would you mind resending?

From:

Oh I'm sorry Ben, I think I forgot to attach it! Here you go https://www.okc.gov/departments/police/crime-prevention-data/jail-blotter
