Mr. Smith,

I think we've been playing a lot of phone tag with regards to this public records request.
In the interest of moving things along, I want to reach out to you in email in hopes that this will help both of us.
An initial search by one of our staff yielded tens of thousands of documents when we searched for "All reports, evaluations, test results, proposed testing, and related materials regarding water supplies and usage in Wilmington, North Carolina, created since January 1, 2016." And that was just when we did an email search.
That being the case, I wanted to ask if you could narrow your search and let us know more specifically what you may be seeking. What may be helpful would be any specific search terms, names, dates, etc.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Thanks.

Hi Jamie, Appreciate the update. We can narrow the search to records regarding the discharge of industrial waste water pollutants. Please conduct keyword searches for "Chemours" "Dupont" "C8" "GenX" "Nafion" and "PFESAs." Much thanks.

From: Kritzer, Jamie

Thanks. We'll get on it.

Mr.<mailto:requests@muckrock.com> Smith,
We just ran a search this morning for your public records and turned up 171,000 items including emails and other documents in our electronic database. As per our policy, we must have our General Counsel’s review the records to ensure they are not confidential or protected under our public records law and that could take some time, as we have numerous prior records requests to fulfill.

Let me know how you would like for us to proceed.

Hi Jamie, Let's reduce the workload by narrowing the time frame to records created since January 1, 2017. Thanks for the heads up regarding the general counsel review, please fulfill whatever portion of this request you can fulfill within 10 business days and then fulfill the remainder of the request when possible. Much appreciated.

From: Narrative Arts

Hi Jamie, We can narrow this to records created in June 2017, matching the aforementioned search terms.

From: Department of Environmental Quality

Hello,

Your public records request resulted in 75,000 items.

Syntax used: ("Chemours" OR "Dupont") AND ("C8" OR "GenX" OR "Nafion" OR "PFESAs")

Date Range: January 1, 2017 to September 20, 2017

Given the large volume of returned items, perhaps you would consider narrowing your search further? Please advise. Thanks.

Hi Jamie, A little confused at this point. Did you get my last email? There were 75,000 documents matching the search parameters--generated in June 2016?

From: Department of Environmental Quality

I looked but must've missed it. I'll see what we come up with for just June.

Hi Jamie, No, thanks, that's as much as we'd like to narrow the search. If you could send us the records in electronic format as rapidly as possible, that would be great.

Hey there,
I will check on this one when I return Monday.

Dear Muck Rock,

In looking closely over this request, it seems much of what you may be seeking is on our laserfiche database, where much of our data on water quality testing resides. I’m not sure we would catalog all proposed testing, however.

I will check in with our water quality staff to see if I can simply point you to laserfiche and let you peruse that database for the information you’re seeking.

Also, I think I misunderstood your original request and had someone seeking emails on this subject matter. You do not want emails, correct?

Hi Jamie, A link or access to the database would be great, but we'd also like the email cache. Thanks.
