Re: OJP FOIA No. 16-00320

Dear Ms. Hopkins:

This is to acknowledge receipt of your Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act request, dated July 20, 2016, and received in the Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Office of the General Counsel, on the same date. A copy of your request is attached for your convenience.

The records you seek require a search in another Office, and so your request falls within "unusual circumstances." See 5 U.S.C. § 552(a)(6)(B)(i)-(iii). Because of these unusual circumstances, we are extending the time limit to respond to your request beyond the ten additional days provided by the statute. We have not yet completed a search to determine whether there are records within the scope of your request. The time needed to process your request will depend on the complexity of our records search and on the volume and complexity of any records located. For your information, this Office assigns incoming requests to one of three tracks: simple, complex, or expedited. Each request is then handled on a first-in, first-out basis in relation to other requests in the same track. Simple requests usually receive a response in approximately one month, whereas complex requests may take longer. At this time, your request has been assigned to the complex track. You may wish to narrow the scope of your request to limit the number of potentially responsive records or agree to an alternative time frame for processing, should records be located; or you may wish to await the completion of our records search to discuss either of these options.

Your request is assigned to Dorothy Lee, Government Information Specialist, for processing. If you have any questions or wish to discuss reformulation or an alternative time frame for the processing of your request, you may contact Ms. Lee by telephone at (202) 307-6235, via e-mail at FOIAOJP@usdoj.gov<mailto:FOIAOJP@usdoj.gov>, or you may write to this office at FOIAOJP, 810 7th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20531. Please include the above-referenced OJP FOIA number. Lastly, you may contact our FOIA Public Liaison at the above telephone number to discuss any aspect of your request.

Hi Dorothy,

I hope that I can clarify my request with you directly rather than appealing through the OIP.

My intention was to request the applications for grants awarded in FY16, and according to this site, it appears those have already been awarded.

https://www.bja.gov/ProgramDetails.aspx?Program_ID=59

I suppose this would mean that I'm looking for 2015 Edward Byrne grant applications. (Please correct me if this is not the case.)

I'd like to further refine my request to include state applications from:

California
Texas
Florida
New York
Pennsylvania

And local applications from:

Washington, D.C.
New York City, New York
Newark, New Jersey
Baltimore, Maryland
St. Louis, Missouri
Chicago, Illinois,
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
New Orleans, Louisiana
Boston, Massachusetts.

Please include both program narratives and budgets.

I want to thank you for your very prompt help up to this point, and I hope that this will help clarify my request.

Best,

Emily

From: FOIAOJP

Ms. Hopkins:

Thank you for clarifying your request. I will assign a tracking number to this request. The FY 2016 JAG awards have not yet been made, however, the 2015 JAG awards are available. I will request the specific portions of the applications you listed below. As soon as I receive them and process them, you will be notified.

Again, thank you.
