From: Erik Peterson

To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to Montana's Constitution, Article II, § 9, I hereby request the following records:

A log of public records requests submitted to the Attorney General's office that lists the date of request, the requester's name, the requester's organizational affiliation, a description of the request and the date the request was filled. Ideally I would like this information for the period from 2004 to the present.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, and is made in the process of academic research and not for commercial usage.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely,

Erik Peterson

Mr. Peterson:

The Montana Attorney General’s Office does not maintain a log of public records requests. We can put together such a log going back as far as January 7, 2013, which is when the current administration took office.

We estimate a cost of $189.83 to fulfill your request (8 hours @ $25.31 per hour after the first half-hour, pursuant to policy).

You must agree in writing to the estimated cost prior to work on the request starting. If the costs are projected to exceed the estimated cost, you must agree in writing to pay the new estimated cost before work continues. Payment for records requests must be received by the Department of Justice and the check cleared prior to the release of the information.

Please let me know how you wish to proceed.

Sincerely,

John Barnes
Director of Communications
Montana Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General
