HuffPost reported that Smith County Sheriff's Department is overseeing the criminal investigation into Rasheem's death. Taylorsville Police Chief Gabe Horn told a local newspaper in December that Rasheem Carter filed a police report when he visited the station but declined to press any charges against whomever was threatening him. Police found Rasheem's body on November 2, 2022. https://www.natchezdemocrat.com/2022/12/07/family-seeking-answers-in-fayette-mans-death/

Local media reported that the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation stepped in to assist in the investigation into Rasheem Carter's death. https://www.wlbt.com/2023/03/22/mbi-asking-publics-help-rasheem-carter-death-investigation/

I'm a senior reporter for the Guardian, and the family has been outspoken about this case. The case is a matter of public interest given that the case has been unresolved at the moment, without a suspect in custody, and the case is under investigation. That said, I would request a rolling release of materials if possible.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 7 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Edwin Rios

Hey all,

I would also like to amend my request slightly. I want to request any emails to, from, and cc'ing Smith County Sheriff's Department Sheriff Joel Houston that includes the keywords "Rasheem Carter" "Carter" "Rasheem". He has been quoted in news reports answering questions on the department's behalf about the Rasheem Carter case.

Thanks,

Edwin Rios, The Guardian
