From: Waqas Mirza

To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Massachusetts Public Records Law, M.G.L. c.66, ยง10, I hereby request the following records:

A copy of all briefs, memos, directives, PowerPoint slides, guidelines or other documents concerning Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) or Promoting Engagement, Acceptance and Community Empowerment (PEACE) programs.

A copy of all records that define, display, present, state, update, clarify, teach, or explain any CVE/PEACE programs.

A copy of all emails, letters, and other written communication between Department of Education employees and between Department of Education employees and other governmental partners concerning CVE/PEACE programs.

You may restrict your search to records created from February 1, 2016 to the date this request is processed.

I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as we believe this request is in the public interest, as suggested but not stipulated by the recommendations of the Massachusetts Supervisor of Public Records. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.

I expect the request to be filled in an accessible format, including for screen readers, which provide text-to-speech for persons unable to read print. Files that are not accessible to screen readers include, for example, .pdf image files as well as physical documents.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Waqas Mirza

Dear Mr. Mirza:

I write to acknowledge receipt of your public records request. We'll get started on this immediately. Two questions:

1) Is it safe to assume you do not need duplicates of the records produced to your previously re: the CVE curriculum. Strictly speaking, I think these respond to your request.

2) Last time I worked on a request from you, you had additional info about specific records you were interested in. If you could share that with me this time like you did last time, it will speed up my response time. Thank you.

Last thing, please direct future correspondence on this matter to Jonathan Goldman in the legal office. His email is jonathan.goldman@doe.mass.edu<mailto:jonathan.goldman@doe.mass.edu>.

Thank you,

Hi Josh,

Thank you for your response. To clarify:

1) This request is for records that have been produced since my last request, excluding any duplicates.

2) The person involved in the CVE/PEACE program is "Anne Gilligan, MPH, Safe and Healthy Schools Coordinator, Massachusetts Department of Education."

Hope that helps! Please feel free to reach out to me if you need me to clarify anything else.

Thank you,

Waqas Mirza.
