To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the California Public Records Act (California Government Code ยงยง 6250), I hereby request the following records:

Police reports for every motor vehicle break-in and/or larceny from a motor vehicle that occurred in 2015. I want to determine how many vehicle break-ins occurred in your jurisdiction and basic information about each, including what, if anything, was stolen.

I want to see all the information contained in each police report, including, but not limited to, the time and location of each crime; the criminal's method of entry; the make and model of the vehicle; descriptions of what was stolen and where from inside the vehicle each item was stolen; victims' names, ages, addresses and contact information; and the narrative summary of what happened.

If this data is collated in a digital file or database, providing the results of a search query that yields this information would be an acceptable substitute to physical copies of the reports.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Ben Hallman

Given the quantity of reports that our request is likely to produce, we want to narrow it. Instead of requesting incident reports for every larceny from a motor vehicle in 2015, we are now only requesting reports for larcenies from motor vehicles in which a firearm was stolen in 2015.

We still want see all the information contained in the report, including, but not limited to, the time and location of each incident; the criminal's method of entry; the make and model of the vehicle; descriptions of what was stolen and where from inside the vehicle each item was stolen; the victims' names, ages and contact information; and the narrative summary of what happened.

Please also provide the TOTAL number of larcenies from motor vehicles that were reported to your department in 2015, no matter what, if anything, was stolen. All we need here is a number.

If this data is collated in a digital file or database, providing the results of a search query that yields this information would be an acceptable substitute to physical copies of the reports.

Dear Mr. Hallman,

We received your request and will need additional time. Consequently, pursuant to the Government Code, we are extending the time within which to identify responsive records. We anticipate a response to your request on or before August 15, 2016.

Just to followup, we're working on something of a time constraint. If you could let me know how long it might take to fill this request, we might opt to narrow it even further.

From: Records Coordinator

Good morning, Mr. Hallman,

I know staff are working diligently on your request. If you want to narrow any part, let us know and we may be able to provide records earlier. Thank you.

I'm not sure how many reports of thefts of guns from automobiles your jurisdiction received last year, but if you could provide a small sample of, say, incident reports for such cases, I think that would suffice. We may followup later and request them all but like I said we're on a time constraint for this first story.

From: Records Coordinator

Good afternoon,

Per the extension previously sent below, we anticipated that we would have records available by that time. We are continuing to work on the request and will have a response shortly. Thank you.

Sincerely,
