Gun Theft Stats

Brian Freskos filed this request with the Lincoln Police Department of Lincoln, NE.

From: Ben Hallman

To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Nebraska Public Records Statutes (Neb. Rev. Stat. § 84-712), I hereby request the following records:

1) The total number of firearms reported stolen to your department in 2015.

2) The total number of firearms reported stolen from motor vehicles to your department in 2015.

I submitted on July 21 and 22 requests for police reports related to the theft of firearms from motor vehicles and asking for the total number of automobile burglaries in 2015. If you have not already completed that request, please complete this one first if possible.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 4 business days, as the statute requires.

I am in receipt of your request. Sorry for the delay, it has been a busy week. What do you mean by your #1?

From: Ben Hallman

Thanks Tonya. We just want to find out how many firearms were stolen in your jurisdiction for 2015.

For #1, we're seeking the number of firearms that were reported stolen from all sources (residences, businesses, gun shops, cars, etc.)

For #2, we're seeking the number of firearms that were stolen from cars only.

This is very much like your first request. You can gather this information on the Lincoln Police Department’s website. The following link is all stolen firearms since 12/20/13: This would satisfy your Request No. 1. To satisfy your Request No. 2, you can then find more details about the each theft on: For example:
The first firearm listed was stolen on 12-20-2013, case #B3-116993. I went to the call for service page and entered the date, and then searched the case number (b3-116993). This was a larceny from building.
You could also download this information as a CVS file and do a search.
