Good morning, Ms. Nason.
I have received your Freedom of Information Act request seeking "Reports
on the number of gun-related deaths from 2010-present.." Please provide
us with a definition of what you mean by "gun-related deaths." For
example, do you mean to include only homicides or homicides in addition to
police officer involved shooting deaths or some other definition? Or are
you merely seeking general statistics? If that is the case, please let me
know.
Additionally, please be advised that your request is considered to be a
categorical request and is unduly burdensome under 5 ILCS 140/3(g).
Retrieving, reviewing, redacting and copying all of the requested records
would take a staff person approximately 8-10 hours which would then cause
a delay in daily work duties. This section of the Act allows the public
body to work with a requestor to narrow the scope of the request. If you
could narrow the scope of your request to a specific geographic area and
provide us with your definition of "gun-related deaths," that would enable
us to better provide you with documents.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at
(217)524-6899.
Sincerely,
Erin

Additionally, if you could please narrow the scope of your request to a
smaller time frame, that would make responding more manageable.
Thank you.

Hi,
By "gun-related deaths" I mean all homicides, manslaughter, and suicides. Could I please limit the scope to 2015-106?
Let me know if this helps.
Thank you,
Vanessa

Also, please include police-officer shootings.
Thanks!

Re: FOIR #17-0579
Dear Ms. Nason:
Thank you for writing the Illinois State Police with your request for
information pursuant to the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS
140/1 et seq. On February 24, 2017, we received your request for the
following: 2015 and 2016 gun-related deaths. You indicated that you
defined gun-related deaths as officer-involved shootings, homicides,
manslaughter and suicides.
Your request is granted in part and denied in part.
2015 - 34 Officer Involved Shootings; 120 Homicides
2016 - 42 Officer Involved Shootings; 137 Homicides
Please be advised that the Illinois State Police does not track
"manslaughter." While the Illinois State Police maintains preliminary
information about suicides, those records are exempt from disclosure by 5
ILCS 140/7(1)(f) - preliminary drafts, notes, recommendations, memoranda
and other records in which opinions are expressed. Official information
about suicide numbers would have to be sought from individual coroner's
offices.
