ALEC - AGs Request (Office of the Attorney General - Connecticut)

To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Connecticut Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA"), I hereby request the following records:

- All communications between members of this office and employees or representatives of the American Legislative Exchange Council.
- All communications containing the keywords "ALEC" or "American Legislative Exchange Council".
- Any files or documents attached to the above communications.

I also request that, if possible and pursuant to Conn. Gen. Stat. § 1-212(d), fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest and not made for commercial gain. The requested documents will be processed by a representative of the news media/press and made available to the public at MuckRock.com.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 4 business days, as the statute requires.

In my request, I asked for any communications regarding the terms ALEC or American Legislative Exchange Council, containing those terms, or between the AG's office and the organization known as ALEC. Not to be a pain, but would you confirm that a good faith search has been made for any documents responsive to the full request?

I would like to reiterate that I am requesting information as to how the search was performed. I am in possession of documents that suggest that ALEC regularly files with each Attorney General's office in order to maintain its right to solicit charitable donations in each state. As such, I have reason to believe that there are documents responsive to my request. Responses from other AG offices also suggest that ALEC is regularly in contact with Attorney Generals' offices.

Please respond with an overview of how the search was performed so that we can identify any issues with the process and fix them moving forward. I am happy to work with you to clarify various elements of the request if necessary.
