To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Ohio Open Records Law, I hereby request the following records:

1) The total number of firearms reported stolen to your department in 2015.

2) The total number of firearms reported stolen from motor vehicles to your department in 2015.

I submitted on July 21 and 22 requests for police reports related to the theft of firearms from motor vehicles and asking for the total number of automobile burglaries in 2015. If you have not already completed that request, please complete this one first if possible.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I would request your response within ten (10) business days.

Sincerely,

Ben Hallman

Good afternoon. This message is in regards to a public records requests received by our office. The request assigned, PRR#16-2518 has been completed and it's been found that there aren't primary gun crime statistics kept on this particular request submitted to be fulfilled. But, the attached information is the breakdown of each type of weapon that is being provided to you as reported stolen. This is the best that we have at this time for what is being requested.

Thanks,

Thanks! So if I were add to the 12 handguns that were reported stolen in the "Theft-From Motor Vehicle - Felony" category and the 2 guns in the "Motor Vehicle Theft" category, a total of 14, would that be the total number stolen from cars?

From: Ben Hallman

And also, does this data include only handguns? Is it possible to look at all types of guns?

From: Tabler, Azizah

Good morning,

In response to your two follow up questions:

1) Anything that has to do with a Theft - From Motor Vehicle - Petit & Theft - From Motor Vehicle - Felony are your two primary tabs to receive your totals from but I would say that the first option (petit) may have been mislabeled because in most stolen gun crimes it would be a (felony). Motor Vehicle Theft is primarily for cars that have first been stolen and later on its found that a gun may have been also in the vehicle at the time of the motor vehicle theft as well. So, you would have to use your discretion on where you would use your totals from (case by case).

2) At the bottom of the spreadsheet there are different tabs to distinguish each type of weapon (BB, Handgun, Shotgun, etc.).

Thanks,

Oops! I didn't see the tabs.

Ok, here's what I did to simplify it. Please let me know if this will give me an accurate count for the total number of guns stolen involving cars. I'm including motor vehicle theft in this because even if the gun was in the car when the car was stolen, it still relates to our topic about storing firearms in cars.

In the "Gun-Semi Auto" tab, I added together Theft- From Motor Vehicle - Felony (95) + Theft - From Motor Vehicle - Petit (5) + Motor Vehicle Theft (9) = 109.

Then in the "Gun-Auto" tab, I added together same three rows (Petit row doesn't exist in that tab so it's really just two rows) and got 14.

109 + 14 = 123, total guns stolen in cars in 2015.

So, I just used the Gun-Semi Auto and Gun-Auto tabs, assuming that all the types of firearms would be counted here. But would those tabs include shotguns as well, as those are often pump-action?

From: Tabler, Azizah

Hello,

Unfortunately, I am not able to add up all the totals for you because I don't know what you are trying to capture in your specifics. You will need to go across the whole bottom tab and add up to receive your totals... or whatever type of firearms you are trying to capture. The only categories we have are the only categories we have for you to pull from and unfortunately if it doesn't list the specific firearm you need we do not have those specifics available or there are not listed to see in the statistics provided but still may or may not be in there. (Ex. Shotgun, Shotgun Sawed-Off, etc.)

Thanks.

From: Ben Hallman

Ok thank you. I'm trying to capture the total number of firearms that were stolen from motor vehicles in 2015. To get that, would I have to add up the rows "Motor Vehicle Theft," "Theft - From Motor Vehicle - Felony" and "Theft - From Motor Vehicle - Petit" for each sheet: Gun - Semi-Auto, Gun-Auto, Handgun, Rifle, Rifle - Semi Auto, Rifle-Auto, Shotgun, Shotgun Sawed-off, and Other Firearm?

From: Tabler, Azizah

Yes you would.
