From: Ben Hallman

To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Colorado Open Records Act, I hereby request the following two records:

1) The total number of firearms reported stolen to your department in 2015.

2) The total number of firearms reported stolen from motor vehicles to your department in 2015.

I submitted on July 21 and 22 requests for police reports related to the theft of firearms from motor vehicles and asking for the total number of automobile burglaries in 2015. If you have not already completed that request, please complete this one first if possible.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 3 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Ben Hallman

Hello Mr. Hallman,
If I read this correctly, you would like to cancel the request we already completed in favor the information below? If so, I will need to have the Crime Analysis folks see if they can determine bullet point 1. Bullet point 2, will be the same result as your current request as the query looked at theft reports from cars when a gun was listed in the property field. The total reports returned was 188.
Let me know how you would like to proceed.
Have a good day!
Aaron

Hi Aaron,

This was a mass request that we sent to several departments. I should have you sent you an individual message as I know we've been talking a lot about my previous request. Sorry for the confusion. This is the first time we've used this new system for requests so there's bound to be some hiccups.

As for my first request, I'd still like to proceed with the query that your unit ran. What is the cost for getting that information and how can we give you payment?

As for this request, if you wouldn't find asking your folks to look at bullet point 1. I'll mark bullet point 2 as completed. One thing: I thought it was 189 reports, not 188?

Thanks!

Hello!

No worries, I just wanted to make sure we get you the data you need! It is 188, I mistakenly added in the header line when I looked at the spreadsheet. The cost for the first release will be $6.00. You can send a check or money order to:

Colorado Springs Police Department
Attn: Records Release Unit
705 S Nevada Ave
Colorado Springs, CO 80903

If you would like we can send you back a receipt for your records. You will get an email by COB today with a link to download your release.

Thanks! Would you mind sending me an invoice for the $6? Seems silly to ask for an invoice for $6 but it will make the people in the office happy.

From: Ben Hallman

Hi Aaron, would you mind sending us an invoice requesting the $6 from The Trace? The Trace is the organization that will be paying for this request. A journalist from there is also going to get in touch with you about another data request that is similar to this one.

From: RUFFALO, Aaron E.

Sure, do you have an email address of mailing address of who I should send this to?

The invoice? Please send to foia@thetrace.org

Thanks! I will get an invoice out to them today!!! - Aaron
