Uber autonomous vehicle testing permit

Sarah Emerson filed this request with the Department of Motor Vehicles of California.

It is a clone of this request.

From: Sarah Emerson

To Whom It May Concern:

On March 8, 2017 Uber was granted an Autonomous Vehicle Testing Permit by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (http://www.theverge.com/2017/3/2/14795282/uber-self-driving-permit-california-dmv-reversal). The CA DMV confirms this on its webpage, "Testing of Autonomous Vehicles" (https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/vr/autonomous/testing). As Uber illegally deployed its self-driving cars in San Francisco last year, potentially endangering human life, it is in the public's best interest to be fully aware of the permit's guidelines and parameters.

### REQUEST ###

Pursuant to the California Public Records Act (California Government Code ยงยง 6250), I hereby request the following records:

A copy of the Autonomous Vehicle Testing Permit issued to Uber (Uber Technologies Inc., or UATC LLC) in March 2016 by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, along with any supporting documents issued to Uber with the permit.

In order to help to determine my status to assess fees, you should know that I am a journalist writing for Motherboard, VICE's technology and science site, and that this request is being made as part of news gathering.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes. They will be used in the course of my reporting for Motherboard (www.motherboard.vice.com).

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request, and I ask that this be processed in the "media" fee category. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Dear Ms. Emerson,

I received another fax today asking for a response to the Public Records request for Uber's application for an Autonomous Vehicle Testing Permit, which I had emailed to you on April 21, 2017, with the application records. Do you need me to send the documents again?

Today's fax says the request was sent in by fax on March 31, April 10, April 20, May 1, and now May 11 (where these faxes were sent to is not indicated in the request). DMV only received the April 20 request and responded on April 21.

I'm sending this to your 35621-55119064 email address because it is the one that appears to be the direct address to you. I'm cc'ing this to the 35620-53980595 email address to whomever might be monitoring that inbox.
