From: UC Berkeley Public Records Office

Dear Mr. Neidenbach:

This is to acknowledge and respond to your California Public Records Act
(CPRA) request below. The University regularly responds to focused and
effective requests that reasonably describe identifiable records relating
to the conduct of the public’s business. Government Code section 6252(e),
6253.1(a).

Your records request, as currently drafted is extremely broad, and
compliance with the request would be unduly burdensome pursuant to
Government Code section 6255. Your request would entail collection and
review of a voluminous number of documents. Please also be aware that
identification and collection of potentially responsive records is only the
first step in the CPRA response process. The collected records must be
reviewed to ensure that they are in fact responsive to your request and to
assess whether they are subject to redaction to protect privacy rights and
consistent with applicable legal privileges and exemptions.

Because we would like to furnish you with a set of information that could
satisfy your needs, we would encourage you to consider narrowing the scope
or nature of the request. Although we cannot compile records in response
to your request as drafted, we would be happy to consider a request that is
more narrowly tailored in terms of time frame and subject matter, including
whose records (for example, the name of person or department) you may be
seeking.

Please let us know how we can assist you in focusing your request.

Regards,

Liane Ko

" including whose records (for example, the name of person or department) you may be seeking."

The original request included this information, Tyrone B. Hayes of UC Berkeley Integrative Biology. I believe his email address is tyrone@berkeley.edu.

Please let me know if there is anything additional that you need.

Dear Mr. Neidenbach:

We understand that you are seeking the emails of Professor Hayes. However,
the request as currently drafted does not reasonable describe identifiable

Would limiting the search to "ruskin", "gillam", "malkan", "CARightToKnow","usrtk","bronners", and "mercola" with the same time frame suffice?

Dear Mr. Neidenbach:

Enclosed are records responsive to your Public Records Act request for
Tyrone Hayes emails. We redacted information regarding individuals,
including information such as phone numbers and email addresses, to protect
their privacy pursuant to Government Code Section 6254(c). We also redacted
student information and identifying information. Students' right to privacy
is protected under federal and state laws, including the Family Educational
Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (34 CFR 99.31) and the Information Practices
Act (IPA) (Civil Code section 1798.24), which are both incorporated into
the California Public Records Act pursuant to Government Code section

right with respect to any of your future requests.

The release of these documents completes this records request, and we now
consider this request closed.
