To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the California Public Records Act, I hereby request the following records:

I would like to obtain all emails sent to, from, or copied to Mr. John Chiang, from January 1, 2014 to Present day containing any of the following non-case-sensitive key-strings: "laundering" or "evasion"

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 calendar days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Taylor S. Amarel

From: Office of the Treasurer

Mr. Amarel:

We are in receipt of your PRA request emailed to this office on June 6, 2019, in which you request copies of any emails sent to, from, or copied to John Chiang from January 1, 2014 to the Present containing the words "laundering" or "evasion."

Please note that John Chiang did not become State Treasurer until January 2015. As a result, we would not have any official communications for the period from January 1, 2014, to January 2015. With respect to the period since then, Mr. Chiang left office at the beginning of 2019. Consistent with records retention policies adopted by this office, records of his administration were transferred to the State Archives. It is possible that we may still have access to his email account, but we are still working on identifying whether we do. As a result, we have not been able to identify any responsive records in our possession. I hope to have more information about your request and whether we have any responsive records next week.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you very much for the detailed follow-up. I appreciate your assistance.

From: Office of the Treasurer

Mr. Amarel:

I have confirmed that we no longer have access to Mr. Chiang's emails. As a result, we are not in possession of any documents responsive to your request. This completes our response to your request.
