15) 20160725201

I also request that, if possible and pursuant to Conn. Gen. Stat. ยง 1-212(d), fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest and not made for commercial gain. The requested documents will be processed by a representative of the news media/press and information contained therein will be made available to the general public. I am a reporter with The Trace, a nonprofit news media outlet headquartered in New York City. But I am making this request using MuckRock's public records request management service to better track and respond to my requests. It is my understanding that each of the cases above involved the theft of a firearm. This request is being made as part of a media project exploring the frequency and circumstances under which firearms are stolen. Firearm theft has become a growing issue in many cities and has significant implications for public safety.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request be filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not. You can send any records or correspondence by replying to this email or sending them to my company email account: foia@thetrace.org

If records or correspondence must be sent using standard mail, I ask that you please send them to the following address:

The Trace
Attn: Brian Freskos
428 Broadway, 4th Floor
New York, NY 10013

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 4 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Brian Freskos

Hi Sgt. Bensey,

This is an email address assigned to this request by MuckRock. The way I understand it, each time I file a request through MuckRock, MuckRock randomly assigns an email address to that request so that I can correspond with the records officer. So to answer your question, yes, this is a real email address.

I'm a reporter with The Trace who uses MuckRock because I file a lot of records requests all over the country and MuckRock helps me file, organize and follow up on them faster. For example, when I want to file a request with your agency, all I have to do is type in the records that I am seeking, then hit Bridgeport Police Department, and MuckRock automatically generates a request and sends it to you.

If you run into issues with sending or receiving messages from me on here, please don't hesitate to email me at my work email, bfreskos@thetrace.org

Thank you again!
Brian

I honestly didn't expect a response! When we received the first request from MuckRock one of my staff filled it without checking with me. We have a portal for freedom of information requests on the city website.

https://bridgeportct.mycusthelp.com/WEBAPP/_rs/(S(akgxnvfoipt0xtf5zvk5xdnk))/supporthome.aspx

The Office of the City Attorney redacts and disseminates all the information through a new program that allows us to track everything citywide. I doubt this will work properly with your automated system. I spoke with the OCA and they have tried to contact Muck Rock in the past without success. If you want the records I advise you to contact them through the portal I provided and I'm sure you can come to an accommodation. Have a great day
