To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Massachusetts Public Records Law, I hereby request the following records:

A copy of all correspondences, memorandums, documents, and photographs concerning the following Boston-based activist groups (treat them as keywords in the search):
Mass. Action Against Police Brutality (MAAPB)
The Coalition to Organize and Mobilize Boston Against Trump (COMBAT)
Socialist Alternative
Resist Fascism
The Party for Socialism and Liberation
Black Lives Matter (BLM) Boston
Movimiento Cosecha
Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP)
Workers World Party (WWP)

I am also requesting a copy of all correspondences and alerts from Geofeedia, a social media monitoring system used by the BPD.

I request that I be properly classified as a news media requester. I am an intern for MuckRock, and I am requesting this information in that editorial capacity. MuckRock is widely known for its investigative work as well as historical pieces based on public records requests.

I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as we believe this request is in the public interest, as suggested but not stipulated by the recommendations of the Massachusetts Supervisor of Public Records. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.

I expect the request to be filled in an accessible format, including for screen readers, which provide text-to-speech for persons unable to read print. Files that are not accessible to screen readers include, for example, .pdf image files as well as physical documents.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Liam Knox

Dear Liam

The Boston Police Department has received your request for records. Before
we conduct a search to determine whether records exist, I ask that you
consider proving a date range. Providing a date range will reduce the
length of time required to review records, should any be located.

I await your reply.

Thank you,
Martha

Good Afternoon Liam:

I am working with Martha DeMaio on your request, and ask that you consider
narrowing the scope, the date range, or provide other limiting keywords.
The results based on your key words are voluminous.

I ask that you provide another context related to your request to aid us in
reviewing and providing any responsive public records.

I await your reply.

Yours truly,

Shawn A. Williams, Esq.

Hi Shawn,

I can narrow my request to the following groups, about half of those I asked for originally:
Mass. Action Against Police Brutality (MAAPB)
The Coalition to Organize and Mobilize Boston Against Trump (COMBAT)
The Party for Socialism and Liberation
Black Lives Matter (BLM) Boston
Movimiento Cosecha

I can also narrow my request for Geofeedia alerts and correspondences to pertain only to the groups mentioned above, and limit the time frame of the request to 2012-2019.

Please let me know if this lessens the burden of your search at all. Thank you!

Best,

Liam Knox
