From: Todd Feathers

To Whom It May Concern:

Pursuant to the Arizona Public Records Law, I hereby request the following records:

1) Copies of all research papers, reports, assessments of efficacy, audits or comparable material prepared by Department of Education staff or sent to the department by other parties regarding the automated essay scoring engine — known as AutoScore — developed by the American Institutes for Research. This tool is currently used by New Hampshire, Ohio, Utah, and Arizona to score language arts essays on statewide assessments. More information about the tool can be found in the attached document.

I ask that all fees be waived as I am a journalist and I intend to use the requested records to publish articles in the public interest and not for any commercial purpose.

The requested documents will be made available to the general public, and this request is not being made for commercial purposes.

In the event that there are fees, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 10 business days.

Sincerely,

Todd Feathers
