Policing the Police: Domestic Violence

According to the National Center for Women & Policing, 40 percent of families with police officers in them experience domestic violence, a far higher rate than the 10% affected in the general population.

MuckRock is launching this crowdsourced project to begin looking at how many police officers have been accused of domestic violence in local police departments nationwide, whether these officers are still working, and what the specific nature of the accusations are.

The first step for us will be finding out whether or not a department has a policy addressing domestic violence and, if so, getting a copy. You can help. Submit your local town or police department below, and we’ll submit a public records requests for its current procedures.
