FOI Request

"threat of radicalization and extremism" regular reports (OIA)

Requested by witnesses on Sept. 30, 2011 for the Under Secretary Office of Intelligence & Analysis of United States of America

Status: Awaiting Response, past due by 3 months, 3 weeks

From Jason Smathers on Sept. 30, 2011:

To Whom It May Concern:

This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act. I hereby request the following records:

Copies of all regular reports between 1/1/2011 and the date this requested is processed made by the person responsible for the DHS priority "threat of radicalization and extremism."

Regular reports would be typical weekly, monthly, quarterly, or as needed updates on the status of the operation made by the director or head of the "threat of radicalization and extremism" DHS priority. The reports may be for their direct supervisor, a board, congress, committees, etc. I provide this additional information and examples to help define what "regular report" means.

I also request that, if appropriate, fees be waived as I believe this request is in the public interest. The requested documents will be made available to the general public free of charge as part of the public information service at MuckRock.com, processed by a representative of the news media/press and is made in the process of news gathering and not for commercial usage.

In the event that fees cannot be waived, I would be grateful if you would inform me of the total charges in advance of fulfilling my request. I would prefer the request filled electronically, by e-mail attachment if available or CD-ROM if not.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter. I look forward to receiving your response to this request within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Jason Smathers

From Jason Smathers to Under Secretary Office of Intelligence & Analysis <I&AFOIA@hq.dhs.gov> on Nov. 29, 2011:

To Whom It May Concern:

I wanted to follow up on the following Freedom of Information request, copied below, and originally submitted on Sept. 30, 2011. Please let me know when I can expect to receive a response, or if further clarification is needed. You had assigned it reference number #11-OIA-0057.

Thank you for your help.

From Department of Homeland Security on Dec. 22, 2011:

An interim response, stating that some responsive documents have been withheld in their entirety while others are awaiting further review.

From Jason Smathers to Under Secretary Office of Intelligence & Analysis <I&AFOIA@hq.dhs.gov> on Dec. 27, 2011:

I appeal the withholding of 18 pages in their entirety. Please review these pages and provide all segregated portions that are not properly classified. I expect some portions of the 18 pages to be available for release and not properly classified and therefore not eligible for the (b)(1) FOIA exemption.

Regards,
Jason Smathers
